Employment

Tables 16 and 17: In 2007, of the 23,706,208 individuals with disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 8,581,869 individuals were employed—an employment rate of 36.2 percent. In contrast, of the 171,314,315 individuals without disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 128,522,771 individuals were employed—an employment rate of 75.0 percent. The employment rate for people with disabilities was highest in North Dakota (51.5 percent) and lowest in West Virginia (27.5 percent).

Tables 18 and 24a: In 2007, of the 5,322,913 individuals with sensory disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 2,411,022 were employed—an employment rate of 45.3 percent—the highest rate among the disability types collected in the ACS.

Tables 19 and 24a: In 2007, of the 14,124,165 individuals with physical disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 4,365,360 were employed—an employment rate of 30.9 percent.

Tables 20 and 24a: In 2007, of the 9,254,063 individuals with mental disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 2,543,140 were employed—an employment rate of 27.5 percent.

Tables 21 and 24b: In 2007, of the 4,210,724 individuals with self-care disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 700,030 were employed—an employment rate of 16.6 percent.

Tables 22 and 24b: In 2007, of the 6,253,960 individuals with go-outside-home disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 1,026,547 were employed—an employment rate of 16.4 percent.

Tables 23 and 24b: In 2007, of the 13,807,783 individuals with employment disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community, 2,344,855 were employed—an employment rate of 17.0 percent.

Table 25: In 2007, the employment rate of individuals with disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community was 36.2 percent, while the employment rate of individuals with disabilities ages 16 to 64 years living in the community was 75.0 percent—an employment gap of 38.8 percentage points. The employment gap was greatest in Kentucky (45.6 percentage points) and smallest in Utah (28.7 percentage points).
