Enrollment in Education

Tables 38 and 39: In 2007, of the 4,641,555 individuals with disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 720,879 individuals were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 15.5 percent. In contrast, of the 63,253,466 individuals without disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 15,849,237 individuals were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 25.1 percent. The enrollment rate for people with disabilities was highest in the Rhode Island (24.2 percent) and lowest in Nevada (9.0 percent).

Tables 40 and 46a: In 2007, of the 968,727 individuals with sensory disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 168,505 were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 17.4 percent—the highest rate among the disability types in the ACS.

Tables 41 and 46a: In 2007, of the 1,731,991 individuals with physical disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 209,089 were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 12.1 percent.

Tables 42 and 46a: In 2007, of the 2,449,492 individuals with mental disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 365,266 were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 14.9 percent.

Tables 43 and 46b: In 2007, of the 606,411 individuals with self-care disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 52,912 were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 8.7 percent.

Tables 44 and 46b: In 2007, of the 1,178,837 individuals with go-outside-home disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 98,283 were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 8.3 percent.

Tables 45 and 46b: In 2007, of the 2,234,701 individuals with employment disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community, 203,914 were enrolled in college or graduate school—an enrollment rate of 9.1 percent.

Table 47: In 2007, the poverty rate of individuals with disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community was 15.5 percent, while the poverty rate of individuals without disabilities ages 18 to 34 years living in the community was 25.1 percent—a gap of 9.6 percentage points. The gap was smallest in Alaska (-0.3 percentage points) and greatest in the North Dakota (15.2 percentage points).
