Tables 56: According to data from the Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), in 2006, there were 205,771,000 individuals aged 18 and over living in the community, 39,527,000 of which were individuals with disabilities—a prevalence rate of 19.2 percent. The state with the largest number of individuals with disabilities was California, with 4,599,000 individuals with disabilities, while the state with the smallest number of individuals with disabilities was Wyoming, with 69,000 individuals with disabilities. West Virginia had the highest prevalence rate, 25.8 percent, while Hawaii had the lowest prevalence rate, 11.4 percent.

Tables 57: In 2006, the prevalence of disability increased with age in all states. The state with the highest prevalence rate for individuals aged 18-44 years was Kentucky (16.3 percent), while the lowest was in Hawaii (7.2 percent). For individuals aged 45-64 years, the highest prevalence rate was in Oregon (31.3 percent), while the lowest was in Hawaii (13.4 percent). Tables 58: In 2006, adults (aged 18 years and older) with disabilities rated their health poorer than adults without disabilities: 61.4 percent of adults without disabilities reported excellent or very good health, compared to 29.9 percent of adults with disabilities; 29.3 percent of adults without disabilities reported good health, compared to 31.6 percent of adults with disabilities; and only 9.5 percent of adults without disabilities reported fair or poor health, compared to 39.4 percent of adults with disabilities. This general pattern held true in all states.

Table 59: In 2006, adults (aged 18 years and older) with disabilities where more likely to smoke (29.5 percent) than adults without disabilities (22.4 percent). This finding was observed in all states except Florida.

Table 60: In 2006, adults (aged 18 years and older) with disabilities were more likely to be obese (31.4 percent) than adults without disabilities (19.8 percent). This finding was observed in all states.

Table 61: In 2006, adults (aged 18 years and older) with disabilities were more likely to be physically inactive (23.8 percent) than adults without disabilities (13.3 percent). This finding was observed in all states, except Kansas.

Table 62: In 2006, adults (aged 18 years and older) with disabilities were more likely to be have been vaccinated for influenza in the past year (34.7 percent) than adults without disabilities (30.2 percent). This finding was observed in all states, except Hawaii and Indiana.

Table 63: In 2006, adults (aged 18 years and older) with disabilities were more likely to be have ever been vaccinated for pneumonia (29.9 percent) than adults without disabilities (21.2 percent). This finding was observed, except Kentucky and Louisiana.

Table 64a: In 2006, individuals aged 18-44 with disabilities in Hawaii were most likely to have health insurance coverage (93.4 percent), while individuals aged 18-44 with disabilities in West Virginia were least likely to have health insurance coverage (64.5 percent).

Table 64b: In 2006, individuals aged 45-64 with disabilities in Minnesota were most likely to have health insurance coverage (96.4 percent), while individuals aged 45-64 with disabilities in Louisiana were least likely to have health insurance coverage (74.7 percent).

Table 65a: In 2006, individuals aged 18-44 with disabilities in Iowa were most likely to have a continuous healthcare provider (96.9 percent), while individuals aged 18-44 with disabilities in Nevada were least likely to have a continuous healthcare provider (61.7 percent).

Table 65b: In 2006, individuals aged 45-64 with disabilities in Massachusetts were most likely to have a continuous healthcare provider (94.7 percent), while individuals aged 45-64 with disabilities in Alaska were least likely to have a continuous healthcare provider (80.1 percent).

Table 65c: In 2006, individuals aged 65 and over with disabilities in Pennsylvania were most likely to have a continuous healthcare provider (97.5 percent), while individuals aged 45-64 with disabilities in Iowa were least likely to have a continuous healthcare provider (85.1 percent).
