Removing Barriers that Prevent People with Disabilities from Working

  • Supported the Employment for Youth and Young Adults with Disabilities: Translating Evidence Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic Virtual Symposium. The symposium was conducted by the ICDR to examine research evidence and strategies for improving education and employment outcomes for youth and young adults with disabilities during the pandemic and beyond.
  • Supported RSA’s efforts to inform the public about available discretionary grant opportunities through a designated RSA Discretionary Grants Page and social media.
  • Operated the National Clearinghouse of Rehabilitation Training Materials (NCRTM), which houses resources and products from projects funded by the Rehabilitation Services Administration that inform the rehabilitation community about effective models and research they can put into practice to increase employment for people with disabilities. In 2021, New Editions was awarded a 2nd 5-year contract to host and manage the clearinghouse and continues to grow this robust and dynamic source of promising practices from the field.
  • Added new curated lists of Resources from the NCRTM on trauma-informed care, culturally responsive practices, work incentives and financial literacy. There are currently 17 sets of resource lists.
  • Contributed to a monthly VR Workforce Studio Podcast. Since January 2018, we have a segment featuring NCRTM resources that complement the monthly topic. In October 2021, we were honored to be a part of the 100th episode of this podcast that began in March 2015 and has had 31,000 downloads.
  • Supported safe driving for interstate and commercial drivers for the DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The New Editions team continued to support the vision exemption program and National Registry program. New Editions receives and reviews applications from commercial drivers for completeness and compliance with program guidelines, works with drivers to receive all required documentation, staffs a call center to respond to questions and clarify requirements for drivers, and provides program statistics and data to FMCSA. The team provides help desk support and validates medical examiners credentials in support of the national registry for medical examiners who play a key role in assuring that individuals meet the medical criteria for continuing to serve as commercial drivers.
